Tick Fever in Dogs in Malaysia: Signs, Testing & Prevention

In Malaysia there is no tick "season": the brown dog tick thrives in our heat and humidity all year, in gardens, kennels and even inside homes. Ticks are more than a nuisance. They carry blood parasites that cause what owners call "tick fever", one of the most common serious illnesses vets in Malaysia see in dogs.

What is tick fever?

"Tick fever" covers a few blood infections spread by ticks. A dog can carry more than one at the same time. Without treatment they can cause bleeding problems, organ damage and death; with early diagnosis, most dogs recover well. The main ones are:

  • Ehrlichiosis: caused by Ehrlichia bacteria that attack white blood cells and platelets.
  • Babesiosis: caused by Babesia parasites that destroy red blood cells, leading to anaemia.
  • Anaplasmosis: a related bacterial infection that also lowers platelets.

Warning signs to watch for

If your dog has had ticks recently and shows any of the signs below, see a vet the same day. Vets use a quick in-clinic blood test and a blood smear to check for tick fever.

  • Low energy, sleeping more than usual
  • Not eating or eating much less
  • Fever (warm ears and body, panting at rest)
  • Pale gums instead of healthy pink
  • Nosebleeds, bruising or tiny red spots on the belly or gums
  • Dark or red-brown urine
  • Weight loss, swollen lymph nodes or yellowish gums and eyes

How to check your dog for ticks

Run your fingers slowly through your dog's coat every day, especially after walks. Ticks love the ears, between the toes, armpits, groin, neck and under the collar. They can be as small as a sesame seed before they feed.

To remove a tick, grip it as close to the skin as possible with fine tweezers or a tick hook and pull straight out steadily. Do not squeeze, burn or apply oil. Clean the area and wash your hands.

Prevention that works in Malaysia

  • Use a vet-recommended tick preventive all year: monthly chewables, spot-ons or long-acting collars.
  • Treat every dog in the household at the same time.
  • Wash bedding in hot water weekly and vacuum corners, skirting boards and sofa gaps.
  • Keep grass short and clear leaf litter where your dog rests.
  • Ask your vet about a yearly tick-fever blood test, especially for dogs that board or go to groomers.

Supporting recovery

Dogs recovering from tick fever often have a poor appetite. Follow your vet's treatment plan exactly; it usually lasts several weeks. Once your vet says your dog can return to normal food, a small number of natural treats can help encourage eating. A healthy skin and coat also makes daily tick checks easier.

FAQ

Can humans catch tick fever from dogs?

Dogs do not pass ehrlichiosis or babesiosis directly to people. However, the same ticks can bite humans, so remove ticks carefully and wash your hands.

How long does tick fever treatment take?

Treatment often lasts two to four weeks, with follow-up blood tests. Some dogs need hospital care or a blood transfusion if anaemia or low platelets are severe.

Is tick fever more common in certain dogs?

Any dog can get it. Dogs that go outdoors, live with other dogs, board in kennels or visit grooming salons are exposed to more ticks.
