How to Choose Healthy Dog Treats in Malaysia (2026 Guide)

Walk into any pet shop in Malaysia — or scroll Shopee — and you will find hundreds of dog treats. Many are cheap, colourful and smell great to your dog, but the label tells a different story: artificial colours, sugar, salt and preservatives your dog does not need.

Treats can be a genuinely healthy part of your dog's day if you choose well. Use this checklist the next time you buy.

1. Read the first three ingredients

Ingredients are listed by weight, so the first three tell you what the treat really is. Look for recognisable whole foods — meat, fish, vegetables, oats, pumpkin — rather than "meat by-products", "cereal derivatives" or sugar.

2. Avoid artificial colours, flavours and added sugar

Dogs do not care what colour their treat is — bright red or green treats are coloured for humans. Added sugar, corn syrup and caramel encourage weight gain and dental problems. Choose treats made with natural ingredients and no artificial additives.

3. Check it is approved for sale in Malaysia

Pet food and treats sold in Malaysia should comply with the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS / Jabatan Perkhidmatan Veterinar) requirements. A DVS-approved product gives you extra confidence about where it comes from and how it was imported. Be careful with very cheap unbranded treats with no local importer details.

4. Pick a treat with a purpose

A treat can do more than taste good. Functional treats add nutrients that support a specific need:

  • Hip & joint — natural sources of glucosamine and chondroitin for active and senior dogs.
  • Skin & coat — omega 3 and 6 fatty acids for dogs that scratch or shed in our humid weather.
  • Teeth & gum — ingredients like mint and parsley that help freshen breath.
  • All-round — a mix of the above for healthy adult dogs.

5. Size, texture and calories

Small dogs need small pieces — a large chew can be a choking risk. Senior dogs with weaker teeth do better with softer treats. And keep an eye on calories: treats should make up no more than about 10% of your dog's daily calories (see our guide on how many treats a dog can eat per day).

6. Freshness and storage

Malaysia's heat and humidity make treats go stale or mouldy faster. Check the expiry date, buy a pack size you will finish within a few weeks of opening, and always reseal the bag and keep it somewhere cool and dry.

FAQ

Are natural dog treats better than normal treats?

Treats made with natural ingredients avoid artificial colours, flavours and unnecessary sugar, which makes them a better everyday choice for most dogs. They still contain calories, so portion control matters.

Can puppies eat the same treats as adult dogs?

Most natural treats are fine for puppies once they are eating solid food, but give smaller pieces and fewer of them. Check the pack guidance and ask your vet if your puppy is very young.
